This week we bring you a new friend.
For whatever reason, we have been blessed with many new friends lately. Massive Praying Mantises (yes, thats the proper plural form), have been frequenting Floating Leaf daily. The largest being approximately 20 cm (thats almost a 8 inches). They are welcome guests and they sit with Buddha-like equanimity for hours perched on a beautiful flower in the garden. Until of course, Bodhi catches sight of one, screams with delight, and chases them around the grounds.

Praying mantises have been auspicious for Putu and I since our first date. We went to a concert at The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. We had seats in the very center of the amphitheater, as far from trees and gardens as possible. We got there early to enjoy a picnic so when we arrived at our section it was empty, just a sea of chairs. As we approached our seats, we could see something already sitting there. It was a single, large praying mantis. But more compelling than that was he seemed to be guarding a treasure of sorts under the seat. It was a wedding ring. Not one that I had placed there. I am not smart enough to have the foresight for that as it was just our first date, though I admit to having an inkling. It just happened to be a wedding ring that someone lost.

Since then, praying mantises have appeared at propitious moments in our life. This is why they are always welcome at Floating Leaf and they fit perfectly with our mission. Plus, Bodhi loves them almost as much as the tiny lizards he finds.
