Om Swastiastu Samua!
Today’s photograph from Bali features one of the many resplendent bird species found on Bali, the Victoria Crowned Pigeon. Where I was born (Cleveland, Ohio), pigeons are considered flying rats. I always found this cruel (rats are underrated as well). This is certainly not the case in Bali where grace and beauty are found everywhere.
Bali birds and wildlife
He was spotted on a recent Yoga and Wellness Retreat along with many other types of birds, reptiles, flowers, fruits and so much more exotic beauty.
The VCP has elegant plumage consisting of a peacock-like plume on their head which sometimes includes several eye-shaped feathers, a big blue breast and striking red irises. The bird has an unmistakable and hard to believe call that sounds like the bass from a tabla drum. Its an odd whooping low sound somewhat reminiscent of blowing into a bottle.
The VCP is the largest pigeon species in the world with some specimens growing as large as 82 cm (32 inches) long and weighing over of 3.6 kg (7.8 pounds).
