Today’s Bali photo was taken in Floating Leaf’s Lotus Lounge which occupies the second floor. A masterfully carved Buddha sculpture lives there and watches over the antique day bed from Madura.
The Buddha receives offerings daily and on this day was the recipient of one of the enormous lotus flowers that bloom throughout the property.
This Buddha was carved by one of the master artists in our neighboring village of Kemenuh. Kemenuh is just North of our village of Sukawati and historically, the two were the true cultural center of Bali. Contemporary guidebooks will tell you Ubud has that distinction. That might be true for modern day tourist culture, but the authentic master carvers hailed from Sukawati, Kemenuh and another neighboring village of Batubulan.
