Bali Healers and Wellness Retreats

One of our wellness and yoga retreat participants’ most profound and rewarding activities is a visit to a Balian, a traditional Balinese healer.

There are almost as many types of healers as there are reasons for seeking one’s services. Some healing modalities include medicinal herbs and elixirs; while others study the body for tell tale signs of ‘dis-ease’. Others may read palms, use numerology or deep tissue massage to determine the illness or problem. The efficacy of a Bali healer is measured in his or her Taksu, or spiritual power and is evidenced in several ways.

Bali Healers: Seeking Balance

There are believed to be two distinct worlds that exist simultaneously in Bali; Sekala, or the visible world, and the invisible world know as Niskala. A gifted healer can see into the world of Niskala and retrieve a solution to ones ailment. Many healers can discover the problem, but the gifted healer can provide a solution. The Balinese not only acknowledge both the good and bad, they do not exalt one over the other or attempt to banish unwanted traits. In Bali Balance is King. It is the job of the healer to find a path to harmony.

When a Balinese falls ill, usually the first course of action is to make a traditional medicine from local herbs, roots and other natural items. These recipes have been passed down for generations and some derive from ancient Ayurveda, an Indian system of medicine based on balance.

Bali Healer Wellness Retreat

A Balinese Healer works with a participant of our Wellness Yoga Retreat

Balians are committed to helping the people of their village and surrounding areas. Some estimates number the Balians of Bali at 8,000, four times the amount of doctors on the island. People regard the traditional Balinese healer as the first to diagnose and heal their disorder. Western style physicians are plentiful and quite competent on Bali as well, but many will first seek assistance from their traditional healers.

Floating Leaf collaborates with some of the most gifted healers in Bali for our Wellness and Yoga Retreats

Personally, we have been working with and researching Balians all over Bali for the past decade. We have benefited from many, been astounded and amazed on numerous occasions, and at times, been underwhelmed. We currently collaborate with a wide range of healers and some work with our retreat groups to perform special ceremonies or provide one-on-one consultations. One such ceremony is the Malukat, a special cleansing ceremony usually done with flowers in a source of fresh water like a spring of waterfall. Most retreat participants find it moving and powerful, and many are moved to tears. We work with each retreat group to select the healers that we believe can be the most effective. Contact us today to find out more about private healing sessions.

The Balian uses various methodologies to provide a path to balance for a retreat participant

We will be publishing much more on Balians and their practices. We take care not to mention names and not to divulge the location of these skillful healers as a gifted Balian can attract people by the thousands worldwide. A Balians’ first responsibility is to their village and we have seen many over the years become inundated with people and requests making their jobs very difficult. It is said a true Balian will not turn anyone away and not ask for payment (a donation is customary). We only record and discuss healing sessions with expressed approval.

  • I visited Bali a few years ago and had a wonderful peaceful time in Ubud. Are you only operating in Bali? Or – do you have retreat centres in South Africa? We have a small lodge in Mozambique and would love to organize a Balinese Wellness Retreat at our place.

    Thank you

  • Hi Mikaku,
I would like to schedule a visit with a healer (well, 3 actually, all for specific purposes), and came across a “Balian list” online but do not know whether or not that specific Balian would speak enough English or how to find a translator who is experienced enough to translate the Balian’s words. I am currently in the Ubud area for the next 2 weeks, and would be open to recommendations, advice, anything really that would help put me on the right path.
    Thank you!

    • Hello Jenni and thank you for your interest and inquiry.

Due to its highly involved manner of setting up and all the nuances involved, the traditional Balinese healer services we provide is a special service provided to our in-house guests only at this time. It normally takes a few days to set up and we like to know more about the individuals so we can find the appropriate healer for them. If you would like to stay with us and partake in this profound opportunity, kindly share with me your exact dates and I can forward over a special quote and much more information on our services. We have a special package for this and you can learn more here- https://balifloatingleaf.com/retreat_packages/shamanic-healing-package/.

If it doesn’t work out this time, we understand and please contact us a couple weeks prior to your return to Bali and we can help create something special for you.

I would encourage you to pursue this with great caution as we hear of unfortunate situations almost weekly. The Balians we work with are gifted and sincerely want to help. We have longstanding relationships with them. But there are many unscrupulous individuals posing as healers to take advantage of tourists.

Thank you and I hope your trip to Bali is all you dream it to be.

      With gratitude,
      Mikaku

  • […] Please note: The suggestion of a Balian, Mangku or other traditional Balinese healer to undertake a Melukat is very much like a prescription written by a western doctor. A couple of our yoga and wellness retreat participants were disappointed that they were not asked to partake in the Melukat. Just as a doctor would only prescribe antibiotics for a person with a bacterial infection, a true Balinese healer would only suggest a Melukat for those in need. • Good morning,

I’m currently in Ubud. My healing journey began in 2012. I’ve travelled to Bali several times since then, also India. I would like to share more information if you’re able to help guide me to a local traditional healer.
