This week’s Bali photo is of a prodigious resident of Floating Leaf. This extraordinary flower has made its home along the periphery of the property and its vibrant red and yellow ‘claws’ hang proudly. Locally it is called Carribia and there are many verietals including ones we use in our cooking. My favorite item made from the stamens and pistols of the flowers is sambal, the ubiquitous spicy condiment of Indonesia. More universally the perennial is know as Heliconia rostrata. It also has the names Lobster claw and False-bird-of-paradise. Some species grow upwards while others hang down. We are such a fan of this lovely flower that we have included it prominently on the many stone carvings found around Floating Leaf.
