Balinese Pedanda performs a sacred ritual at Pura Ulun Danu Bratan
Om Swastiastu!
I am excited to share this photograph with you, as when I first took notice of this powerful scene I was awestruck. The Taksu or “spiritual power” emanating from this Pedanda or Balinese Hindu High Priest was palpable. Notice the crystals on his head and body as well as the flower pedal in his hand that appears to glow.
This Balinese holy man is performing a purification ritual at Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, one of Bali’s most famous and picturesque temples. Dozens of Balinese are seated in front of him with elaborate offerings that will be pushed out into Lake Bratan towards the great temple that appears to float on the surface of the lake. Holy Lake Bratan sits high in the mountains near the village of Bedugal and irrigates the entire region.
This deep and profound spirituality is what attracted me to Bali decades ago and I am still enthralled to this day. Fortunately, scenes like this are not uncommon in Bali and we can effectively seek out traditional ceremonies and sacred rituals such as this to share with our BaliYoga Retreat participants.
