Surfing Bali ~ The ASP World Championship comes to Floating Leaf’s frontyard
You may have heard the building excitement as event #5 on the 2013 ASP Surfing World Championship comes to our very own Keramas Beach. Keramas being our “home break” and just minutes from Floating Leaf, is finally getting the credit it deserves as not only being one of Bali’s best waves, not only one of Indonesia’s best waves but one of the very best breaks on the planet.
This comes as no surprise to us and the handful of surfers who have known about this once secret spot. Keramas bounded out of secrecy once Andy Iron’s dropped on from a helicopter and the spot began to be featured in surf films. Now, Keramas earned its place to be mentioned among the worlds best surf breaks.
Don’t just take our word for it. Top surfers are coming out in droves saying Keramas is their favorite location and provides perhaps the most high performance wave on the globe.
Surf pro Bruce Irons, winner of the 2008 Rip Curl Pro Search Bali, says,
“I love Bali and Keramas is one of the best waves in the world.”
Former number one ranked surfer in the world, Jordy Smith exclaims,
“The 1st time I heard there would be a ASP at Keramas I was so excited. I started running around the room telling everyone it was gonna be at Keramas! I cant wait to book my villa, get set up, and slay”
Jordy goes on to say,
“I have been coming to Bali for a number of years and Keramas is always a highlight. It has a nice barrel section and then a perfect wall for you to unleash on. I’ve been looking forward to this event all year and the boys are going to go mad out here.”
Joel Parkinson, reigning ASP World Champion, tells us
“I’ve been coming to Keramas for years and it’s one of my favorite waves in the world. The conditions this morning were absolutely incredible – sheet glass and big barrels. You can’t really ask for much more.”
Joel just scored a perfect 20 at Keramas and secured another huge victory at The Oakley Pro. As you might guess, he’s a bit keen on Keramas and summed it up as,
“The perfect all around wave”
Not one likely to succumb to hyperbole, surf pro Ross Williams feels that Keramas
“Could quite possibly be the best World Tour venue available on the planet.”
The video says it all. Bali’s beauty, culture and world class surfing make for the greatest surf vacation in the world. Book your villa today!
In his event report card for The Oakley Pro Bali in Keramas, surf writer Brian Roddy had the following to say about our beloeved Keramas Beach,
Waves: A+. Why it took so long for the idea of holding an ASP World Tour event at Keramas to come into fruition is beyond us. Seriously. Everyone knows that it’s one of the most high-performance waves on the planet. Everyone’s jaw has dropped while watching a clip from Keramas. Everyone has rubbed their eyes while admiring a sequence from Keramas. And for the Oakley Pro, the wave wore her most chic dress for the gentleman on tour. It was elegant.
Surfing: A+. The Oakley Pro Bali was one of the most exciting events we’ve ever seen. Every surfer seemed to have their gaze set above the lip and we saw some of the best airs ever — not to mention some of the ever so close attempts. The rail game was absolutely profound and you can bet the farm that nobody was complaining about the tubes that went down.
Girls: A+. That’s the thing about Bali. It’s one of the most buzzing tourist destinations in the world. Young and attractive folks from all corners of this big blue earth come for a vacation in Bali. And as luck would have it, a very large chunk of those visitors happen to be female. It was dreamy.
Overall: A+. If expectations were met, then we would give this an A. But expectations were exceeded, and so this event ranks as an A+. Outstanding surfing in outstanding waves and all the extra-curricular activities to go along with it. Bravo, Bali. Bravo.
The Surf Channel was stoked to head back to Indonesia. Here is what they had to say,
“First stop is Keramas, where you’ll find perfect barrels, peaceful beaches and plenty of wildlife. In addition to perfect swell day in and day out, Local Style was surprised to discover that the dawn patrol regulars were goofy footers of a different kind. Every morning at Keramas, flocks of ducks can be found shepherded around the beach.”
And finally Surfer Magazine’s Shea Lopez agrees that Keramas is the best world tour venue on the planet and adds,
“Think about it: Most places offer either tubes or high performance surfing, but as a cross between Backdoor and Lowers, Keramas is a perfect marriage for competition… Keramas is very consistent. Not many waves let you get pitted as well as provide a wall that lets you go as big as humanly possible. I predict a show beyond anything we’ve seen before from a World Tour event. Don’t be surprised if you see the biggest air and biggest hack ever done in competition. Although this wave favors the regular footers, you will be hard pressed to find a complaint from the goofies… This will be the surfers’ new favorite spot on Tour.”
Shea goes on to describe surfing Bali,
“Bailing for Bali has been the soul surfer’s ideal since Gerry Lopez and others first discovered the potential of this mystical place. Captivating our attention, occupying our dreams, the gravitational pull of surfers towards Bali is strong. In fact, the majority of surfers on this planet have already, or are planning to one day max out credit cards and jeopardize relationships to live it up in this culturally rich region—a place that blends up a cerebral smoothie of stimulation 24 hours a day.”
